2. State the Week's reasoning question

Worked reasoning: revising claims rather than sentences

Revision has a hierarchy, and working from the bottom of it wastes the effort. Start with the claim: is it contestable, is it specific to the population you defined, is it supported at the right level, and does the artifact actually deliver it. Next the structure: does the order of sections carry a reader from problem to decision without backtracking. Next the evidence: does each claim have the kind of source that can support it, and does each source carry an interpretation. Only then sentences, and only last format. A sentence polished inside a paragraph that will be cut is time spent on nothing. Test the claim by writing its strongest opposing version in one line. If the opposite is obviously absurd, the claim is too safe to be interesting. If the opposite is equally defensible on the evidence you have, the claim needs more support before the prose gets any attention at all.

Turning recurring feedback into a repair list

Feedback becomes useful only once it is grouped. Source work: closing gaps without padding

At this stage a source is added for exactly one reason: a claim is unsupported, or it is supported at the wrong level and a better matched source exists. Everything else is padding, and padding is easy to spot because the added entry appears once, does no analytical work, and carries no interpretive sentence around it. Run the reverse test as well and remove any source whose only function is to occupy a line in the reference list. Then re-check the ledger fields for the surviving entries: date, level, population, usable finding, limitation, and the claim each one supports. A shorter, tightly matched reference set with every entry working reads as better research than a long list, and it makes the verification pass in the final Week fast instead of frantic.

Three revision pitfalls and the fix for each

The first pitfall is polishing the strongest section, which is pleasant and changes nothing. The fix is to allocate revision time in proportion to risk, giving the weakest rubric row the first and longest sitting. The second pitfall is hedging the argument away, where a round of caution turns every claim into a maybe and a reader can no longer tell what is being argued. The fix is to keep one clear claim sentence per section and to confine hedging to the limitation sentence where it belongs. The third pitfall is version confusion, where an older file gets edited or two versions merge badly late at night. The fix is one working file with a dated name, an archive folder for everything superseded, and a final comparison of the working file against the live instructions and the current rubric before anything is submitted.
