  4. Check the balancing measure before drawing breath

    Look at what the change might have cost elsewhere, and report it whether or not it is flattering. Reviewers notice a results section that only shows its own good news.

  5. Name the explanation you cannot rule out

    A concurrent initiative, a seasonal pattern, a staffing change, better documentation rather than better care. Name the strongest rival explanation, then say what evidence would have separated it from your intervention.

  6. Translate the number into something clinical

    Say what the change means for patients on the unit over a month. A percentage point on a chart has to become a count of people before a reader can judge whether it mattered.

Five mistakes that cost points on a results section

  • Two averages standing in for a time series. Comparing a before mean with an after mean hides when movement started, and reviewers ask for the chart precisely because of what averages conceal.
  • A single good point read as success. Every process varies week to week, and treating one favorable period as improvement is the error the interpretation row exists to catch.
  • Outcome claimed without fidelity. When delivery is not reported, no result can be attributed to the intervention, and the strongest sentence in the section collapses.
  • The balancing measure omitted. A results section showing only what improved reads as advocacy, and reviewers who notice the gap discount everything else in it.
  • Limitations written generically. A paragraph about small sample size does no work, while naming the concurrent initiative that could explain the same pattern does.
