2. State the Week's reasoning question

For Leadership and Advocacy in Health Education, the durable class question is: Which population, determinant, stakeholder, and measurable outcome define the problem? Translate the live activity into one sentence that names the decision or explanation, the required evidence, the audience, and the expected output. If that sentence cannot be written, return to the prompt instead of guessing from a prior Week or third-party example.

3. Build the work in proof order

Define the population and baseline, trace determinants and system constraints, compare interventions, and connect the recommendation to implementation and evaluation.

Make a rubric-to-evidence matrix before prose: one row per criterion, the evidence or reasoning needed, where it will appear, what the student must personally do, and the test that will prove completion. Draft the highest-risk row first, not necessarily the introduction. Protect time for replies, calculations, format conversion, approvals, and the final upload.

Worked reasoning: make the determinant chain visible

Showing reasoning in this subject means writing the chain that connects a determinant to an outcome in a population, with every link stated instead of implied. A complete chain has five links: the population and its baseline, the determinant that plausibly moves the outcome, the mechanism by which it moves, the point in the system where an actor could intervene, and the outcome as it would be measured. Write those five as short sentences before writing the section, then check that no link is being carried by a phrase such as "leads to" that hides an unexamined step.

Most reasoning failures at this stage are compressions rather than errors. A sentence that moves from limited transportation to lower screening completion has skipped appointment scheduling, clinic hours, and the referral pathway, and each of those is where a program would actually act. Expanding a compression is not padding, because the expanded step is usually where the strongest evidence and the clearest recommendation are found.

Separate the levels so the analysis can be scored

Sort every claim by the level it belongs to: individual, interpersonal, organizational, community, or policy. A paragraph that mixes an individual knowledge gap with a financing rule reads as two arguments interleaved, and a criterion on analysis will find it. Assign one level per paragraph, name that level in the topic sentence, and let the transitions carry the movement between levels.

Apply the same discipline to time. Distinguish what is true of the population now, what changed across a stated period, and what is projected. A trend claim needs at least two time points from the same source using the same definition, and a source that changed its methodology between years cannot support a trend unless the change is stated. Making these separations visible is exactly what a reasoning-focused Week rewards, because it lets a reader follow the argument instead of reconstructing it.

4. Use evidence deliberately

Use current surveillance, policy, organizational, and peer-reviewed evidence at the same geographic and population level as the claim.

For every source, write a one-line use note before drafting. Distinguish direct evidence from interpretation and local observation. Quote sparingly, paraphrase from understanding, and cite the claim actually supported. If the activity requires current evidence, confirm publication dates and whether an older foundational source is still appropriate.

Sources that carry a step, not sources that decorate

At this stage each source should be assigned to a specific link in the chain. Surveillance and vital statistics carry the baseline link. Peer-reviewed studies and systematic reviews carry the mechanism and effect links, and their design matters: a cross-sectional survey supports an association, while a controlled or well-constructed longitudinal design is needed before an effect claim is defensible. Policy documents and organizational reports carry the intervention-point link, because they describe what is permitted, funded, and staffed. Scholarly here means the method and population are visible enough for a reader to judge fit.

Work a source in by naming what it does before naming who wrote it. A sentence that opens with the claim and closes with the citation reads as analysis; a sentence that opens with an author name and reports findings reads as summary, and summary rarely satisfies an analysis row. Where a source only partly fits the population, say so in the same sentence and explain what remains transferable and why.

5. Complete discussions and collaborative work

When the live Week contains a discussion, schedule the initial post by its own deadline and each reply by the response window. A useful reply does more than agree: compare evidence, apply the peer's idea to a different context, identify a boundary, or ask a focused question supported by the course material. The student writes and posts every contribution; a tutor may critique clarity and reasoning before submission.

6. Protect identity, practice, and research boundaries

Do not share protected health information, employer secrets, client identities, private peer content, assessment security material, or unauthorized research data. Clinical encounters, field hours, simulations, observations, interviews, group participation, proctored work, residencies, approvals, attestations, and original data collection must be completed and recorded by the student under the applicable Walden process.

7. Run the Week 3 quality gate

Test equity, feasibility, stakeholder effects, measurement validity, unintended consequences, and the boundary between association and causation.

Then perform a literal instruction audit: every prompt part answered, rubric row visible, calculation reproducible, citation matched, heading and format correct, accessibility checked, file opened successfully, and confidential material removed. Reading the rubric row by row

Rubrics in a reasoning Week usually separate description from analysis, and that separation is where most points move. Read each row for whether it asks for content or for a relationship between pieces of content. Rows containing analyze, compare, explain the relationship, or justify are asking for the chain, and they are satisfied only when the connecting sentence is visible on the page rather than assumed to be obvious.

Then check the rubric for the required unit of evidence. Some rows ask that a claim be supported, others ask that a specific type of source support it, and others require a limitation to accompany it. Mark in the draft where each of those is met. Because the wording, weighting, and level descriptions belong to your section, the registered classroom rubric decides what is required; the reading method here only helps you see what your own rubric is asking for.

8. Submit and close the loop

The student performs the final upload or entry, opens the submitted artifact, confirms the timestamp and file, and saves the receipt. When feedback arrives, record each criterion result, instructor comment, correction, and lesson for Week 4. Contact the instructor or official support channel promptly for a missing, late, or technically failed submission.

9. Defend the learning before moving on

Before closing Week 3, the student should explain the live task, central claim or decision, strongest evidence, method or calculation, important limitation, and next action aloud without reading the submitted artifact. For a discussion, explain what the peer exchanges changed. For clinical, field, research, group, or proctored work, identify which parts the student personally performed and how they were verified. Any point that cannot be explained becomes the first short practice item for the next study session. This oral defense tests understanding more honestly than another formatting pass and turns the finished Week into preparation for Week 4.

Three reasoning pitfalls and their fixes

The first pitfall is definition stacking, where paragraph after paragraph explains terms without ever making a claim about the population. The fix is a rule that every paragraph ends with a sentence saying what follows for this population; if that sentence cannot be written, the paragraph is background and belongs in one compressed line.

The second pitfall is the hidden inference, where two sourced facts sit side by side and the reader is left to join them. The fix is to write the joining sentence explicitly, then ask whether it is supported, inferred, or assumed, and label it in the working draft until the final pass.

The third pitfall is supporting a local claim with a national figure. National data describes a national population, so using it for a county, campus, or clinic quietly changes the subject. The fix is either to find the figure at the level of the claim or to restate the claim at the level of the figure and say plainly that local data was unavailable.
