Pathophysiology has to open at the cell, because every organ chapter later in the term is the same chemistry at a larger scale. This stage asks what a cell does when its oxygen, its fuel or its signaling changes: it adapts by growing, shrinking, multiplying or switching type, and past a threshold it dies. Walden separately requires students to log in and put up graded work inside the first week of a term, so this stage has a floor under it before your section adds anything. What sits on that floor is a discussion, an assignment, or both, and only your syllabus says which.
Where each topic sits in these eleven manuals is our own clinical judgment about how a patho term is built rather than a schedule copied from Walden. The university posts no syllabus to the open web, and the course guide that would settle the question is locked to people already enrolled in the section. What the first patho rubric looks for
A Walden grade is a letter assembled out of rubric rows, and each row is a separate promise the grader has agreed to check. In a cellular week the rows almost always split description from mechanism: one asks what happened to the cell, the next asks why that produced the finding at the bedside. Answer them in separate paragraphs, because a grader hunting for the second row will not go looking inside the first.
The second thing this stage rewards is level. Say adaptation and the row stays open. Say that sustained pressure lowered oxygen delivery, that the cell fell back on anaerobic metabolism, and that lactate rose while adenosine triphosphate fell, and the row closes. Depth is not length here, it is the number of connected steps you can defend.
If a discussion is attached, participation is a scored behavior as well as a piece of writing. Walden asks for substantive and timely posting and suggests spreading contributions over two to four days at minimum, so an initial post midweek with replies on two later days reads better than the whole obligation compressed into one late sitting.

Fix the insult in time and place
Write down what changed, where it acted, and for how long, before anything else goes on the page. Pressure over the sacrum for six hours, a clamped vessel, a toxin, a virus: the stressor decides which adaptive route is even available to the cell.

Decide whether the cell is adapting or failing
Hypertrophy, hyperplasia, atrophy and metaplasia are working responses. Swelling, membrane rupture and nuclear breakdown are not. Name which side of that line your case sits on in the opening paragraph, because everything downstream depends on the answer.

Follow the energy before you follow the symptom
Most cell injury is an energy story. Say what happened to oxygen delivery, what the mitochondria did about it, and what the cell switched to instead, and the rest of the chain becomes straightforward to argue.

Track the ions the pumps stop moving
As adenosine triphosphate falls, the sodium and potassium pump slows, water follows sodium inward, and calcium leaks into the cytosol where it activates enzymes that digest the cell. Those three sentences carry more rubric weight than a paragraph of vocabulary.

Show where reversible becomes irreversible
Point at the threshold: mitochondrial permeability, membrane rupture, dissolution of the nucleus. A paper that never marks the point of no return cannot explain why one patient recovered and another lost the tissue.

Separate the cell's death from the tissue's appearance
Necrosis and apoptosis look different under a microscope and behave differently in the patient, one spilling contents and provoking inflammation, the other quiet and contained. Say which one your case shows and how you can tell.
A layout that answers the rows in order

Annotated sample excerpt: cellular injury
Below is a model paragraph our tutors wrote for this stage. Study the moves rather than the wording, then put them to work on the patient you were given.
Sustained pressure over the sacrum exceeded capillary closing pressure, so perfusion to the overlying tissue fell while its metabolic demand stayed where it was.1 Deprived of oxygen, the cells shifted to anaerobic glycolysis, adenosine triphosphate production dropped, and the sodium and potassium pump could no longer hold its gradient, so sodium and water moved inward and the cells swelled.2 Once mitochondrial membranes were breached, calcium flooded the cytosol and activated phospholipases and proteases, and at that moment the injury stopped being reversible: the black tissue at the wound base is coagulative necrosis, not a bruise.3

Five ways a cellular week loses points
- Vocabulary standing in for mechanism. Listing apoptosis, autophagy and hyperplasia proves you read the chapter. Saying which one this cell chose, and why that one, is what the row pays for.
- An energy step that never appears. Almost every hypoxic injury runs through failing adenosine triphosphate, and skipping it forces the paper to assert consequences it has not earned.
- Adaptation described as damage. A hypertrophied muscle cell is succeeding at something. Treating every change as pathology throws away the contrast the week is built on.
- No threshold named. Without the point where injury turns irreversible, the paper cannot explain recovery in one patient and tissue loss in another.
- Sources attached only to the tidy claims. The physiology everyone agrees on gets a citation while the contested step stands alone, which is exactly backwards.
Pre-submission checklist
- The stressor is named with its intensity and its duration
- Adaptation and injury sit on separate, clearly marked sides of the paper
- The energy failure appears before any consequence that depends on it
- The point of irreversibility is stated rather than implied
- Cell fate is matched to the tissue changes the case reports
- Every mechanistic claim carries a citation, and the reference list holds nothing else
