2. State the Week's reasoning question

Worked reasoning: carrying a finding across to a decision

Connecting evidence to action is a specific move, and it has parts that can be checked. Start from a finding you can state precisely, including its design and its population or setting. Name the decision the finding is supposed to inform and the person or body who would make it. State the mechanism by which the finding bears on that decision, which is the step most drafts leave to the reader's goodwill. Then state the conditions under which the action would be reasonable and the conditions under which it would not. Only then write the recommendation sentence itself.

Run the finished chain backward as a check. From the recommendation, can a reader retrace the conditions, the mechanism, the decision-maker, and the finding without leaving the page? A recommendation that cannot be retraced is an opinion with a citation attached to it. Watch particularly for the gap between a statistically detectable effect and an effect large enough to change what anyone does; naming that gap explicitly is one of the clearest signals of doctoral reading. 3. Build the work in proof order

Strong recommendations need designs that support causal language and bodies of evidence that agree with one another. Weaker or mixed evidence supports proposals framed as worth testing, worth piloting, or worth monitoring. Guidelines and professional reports are useful here because they represent an appraised consensus, but a guideline is a synthesis of studies and should be cited for what it recommends rather than as though it were a study itself. Working these sources into a draft calls for a visible ladder. Preparatory and written work is what belongs on the page.
