2. State the Week's reasoning question

3. Build the work in proof order

The four moving parts of a visible reasoning paragraph
By the third week most students can say what a recommendation is. The Week 3 move is to show why it applies, and that calls for a different sentence structure rather than a longer one. A reasoning paragraph in pediatric primary care generally has four parts, and they read best in this order. First, the general recommendation as the issuing body states it, in scope-preserving language. Second, the population or age range that recommendation was written for. Third, the rationale, meaning the reason the recommendation exists at all, which is usually a statement about risk, benefit, or developmental timing. Fourth, the boundary, meaning the conditions the guidance itself names as exceptions or as outside its scope. A paragraph missing the fourth part reads as assertion. A paragraph carrying all four reads as reasoning.
The same four-part shape supports comparison, which is what rubrics usually mean when they ask for analysis rather than description. To compare two recommended approaches, do not alternate praise. Hold the population constant, state each recommendation, then set the two rationales side by side and name the specific ground on which they differ: the outcome each prioritizes, the evidence base each rests on, or the age band each addresses. The comparison is finished when a reader could predict which approach you would favor under a stated set of conditions without you having to announce it.
Keep this exercise entirely on published material. The reasoning you are learning to display is reasoning about standards and evidence, worked on the general cases your readings and guidance documents already describe. Reasoning about a particular encounter belongs to the practicum, is performed there under supervision, and is documented by you in the systems your program requires. Reading the rubric row by row for a reasoning task
Rubric rows that govern analysis are the hardest to read literally, so slow down on them. Take each row and underline every verb: describe, explain, compare, justify, evaluate, and apply are not synonyms and rarely earn the same response. Beside the row, write the smallest structure that verb demands. Explain wants a mechanism or a rationale. Compare wants a shared dimension and a difference measured on it. Justify wants a claim plus the reason a competent reader might disagree, answered. Then look at what separates the row's higher description from its lower one; very often the distinction is depth of rationale rather than quantity of content, which means adding paragraphs will not move the row but adding a because clause might. Mark any row asking for something you have not yet found a source for, and make that the week's first research task. As always, the classroom rubric decides what these words mean in this section, and its wording outranks any general reading of the same term.
Sources that carry an argument, and sources that only decorate one
A reasoning week exposes the difference between the two. A carrying source is one whose stated finding does part of the analytical work: it supplies the rationale, establishes the population, quantifies the benefit, or names the limit. A decorating source merely restates something already accepted and sits at the end of a sentence to signal effort. For this subject, carrying sources are usually current guidance from a recognized pediatric or preventive-services body, systematic reviews and well-designed primary studies in indexed journals, and professional standards documents. Decorating sources are usually secondary summaries of those same documents.
The practical test is substitution. Remove the citation and ask whether the sentence still means the same thing. If it does, the source was decoration and can go. If the sentence collapses, the source is carrying, and it deserves a proper introduction: what the study or guideline examined, in whom, and what it concluded. When you paraphrase, paraphrase from your own understanding of the finding rather than from the source's sentence rhythm, and check afterward that your version has not widened a narrow conclusion or narrowed a broad one.
Three ways reasoning goes invisible, and the repair for each
The first is the buried because. The student understands why a recommendation applies but writes only that it does, leaving the reasoning offstage. The repair is a pass through the draft looking for claim sentences with no adjacent reason, adding the missing clause to each one.
The second is the stacked citation. Three sources are attached to one sentence, which looks thorough and tells a reader nothing about what any of them contributed. The repair is to give each source its own sentence and its own job, then delete any that turn out to have none.
The third is the hidden assumption about setting. A recommendation written for one care context is applied in writing to another without the shift being named. The repair is to state the setting and population the source addressed before applying it, and to say plainly when your application reaches past what the source covered. That single sentence of honesty almost always reads as stronger analysis rather than weaker.
