1. Capture the live Week 3

2. State the Week's reasoning question

If that sentence cannot be written, return to the prompt instead of guessing from a prior Week or third-party example.

3. Build the work in proof order

Define the population and baseline, trace determinants and system constraints, compare interventions, and connect the recommendation to implementation and evaluation.

Make a rubric-to-evidence matrix before prose: one row per criterion, the evidence or reasoning needed, where it will appear, what the student must personally do, and the test that will prove completion. Draft the highest-risk row first, not necessarily the introduction. Protect time for replies, calculations, format conversion, approvals, and the final upload.

Making the mechanism visible instead of asserting it

Week 3 is where definitions stop earning credit. The difference between describing an evaluation concept and showing reasoning is whether a reader can follow the mechanism from the starting condition to the outcome without supplying the missing steps themselves. Take any claim you intend to make and write the chain underneath it in short numbered sentences: this population begins at this baseline, this determinant or system constraint operates on it in this way, therefore this outcome moves in this direction and within these bounds, and this is how the movement would be observed.

Then read the chain and mark every arrow that rests on an assumption rather than on a source. Those marks are the work of the Week. Some assumptions are reasonable and only need to be stated. Others need evidence, or need the claim narrowed until it is defensible. A second discipline helps here: whenever you write a comparison, name the alternative explicitly, because a comparison with an unnamed alternative is a preference statement, and preference statements read as unsupported no matter how confident the prose is.

Keep the numbered chain in your working file after you convert it to paragraphs, since it is the fastest way to check later that the prose did not quietly drop a step. Your classroom rubric decides how the reasoning is scored.

Reading the rubric row by row where the reasoning is scored

When the Week's emphasis moves to reasoning, the rows usually stop being checklists and start being judgements, and they need to be read differently. Go row by row and sort each one into evidence of presence or evidence of quality. A presence row asks whether something appears and can be satisfied by structure. A quality row asks how well the thinking holds and can only be satisfied by the chain underneath the prose.

Mark which is which, because presence rows should be closed early and mechanically, leaving your remaining time for the quality rows. For each quality row, write the sentence a reader would be able to say after reading your section if the row were fully met, then check whether your draft makes that sentence available.

Pay attention to the verbs in these rows. Analyze, evaluate, compare, justify, and synthesize are not interchangeable, and a section that analyzes when the row asks you to justify will read as competent and still miss. Where a row uses the course's own evaluation vocabulary, use that vocabulary in the section rather than a synonym, so the match is visible without interpretation. Rows differ across sections and terms, so your classroom rubric decides which verbs are actually in play.

4. Use evidence deliberately

Use current surveillance, policy, organizational, and peer-reviewed evidence at the same geographic and population level as the claim.

For every source, write a one-line use note before drafting. Distinguish direct evidence from interpretation and local observation. Quote sparingly, paraphrase from understanding, and cite the claim actually supported. If the activity requires current evidence, confirm publication dates and whether an older foundational source is still appropriate.

Choosing sources that carry an argument rather than decorate it

A source carries an argument when removing it would break a step in the chain, and it decorates when removing it would change nothing but the reference count. At this stage of the course, test every source that way before it enters the draft.

For evaluation work, the sources that carry weight are usually the ones that establish a comparison: a study with a control or a before-and-after design, a policy document that sets the constraint you are arguing within, measured data at the same level as your claim, or organizational documentation that shows how a system behaves in real use rather than as specified. Grey material can be legitimate here when it is the authoritative record of a standard, a regulation, or a measured programme, but it should be identified as what it is and never asked to do the work of a research design.

Read past the abstract for anything you cite in a reasoning step, because the population, the setting, and the limitation section decide whether the finding transfers to your case. Work sources in by making the claim first, then the support, then the boundary: what the source shows, and where it stops showing it. Naming the boundary strengthens the argument rather than weakening it. Assigned readings remain required, and your classroom rubric decides the source rules.

Showing where a number came from before you reason from it

Showing the reasoning includes showing why a figure means what you say it means, and in this subject that means writing the provenance of a number into the argument rather than leaving it inside a citation. For any figure that carries a step in the chain, record four things: who produced it, from what data, for what original purpose, and how the thing it counts was defined at the moment of collection.

The original purpose matters more than most drafts allow. Data produced to run a service, satisfy a reporting requirement, or support an administrative process is being put to a second use when it appears in your analysis, and that reuse is legitimate only if the definition still fits the claim. A count of recorded events is a count of what was recorded. A rate depends entirely on the denominator somebody chose. A figure described as improved may reflect a change in how the thing was captured rather than a change in the thing itself. None of this disqualifies operational data, which is often the only measured evidence available at the level you need, but it does decide how strongly you are entitled to speak.

Put the provenance in the draft as a clause, not as a paragraph. A sentence saying what the figure is, who produced it, and how the term was defined does more for a reasoning criterion than an additional source would. Where the definition cannot be found, say so plainly and treat the number as indicative rather than as a measurement, then reason inside that limit. Assigned readings still govern wherever they apply, and your classroom rubric decides how much of this the current activity expects to see.

5. Complete discussions and collaborative work

When the live Week contains a discussion, schedule the initial post by its own deadline and each reply by the response window. A useful reply does more than agree: compare evidence, apply the peer's idea to a different context, identify a boundary, or ask a focused question supported by the course material. The student writes and posts every contribution; a tutor may critique clarity and reasoning before submission.

6. Protect identity, practice, and research boundaries

Do not share protected health information, employer secrets, client identities, private peer content, assessment security material, or unauthorized research data. Clinical encounters, field hours, simulations, observations, interviews, group participation, proctored work, residencies, approvals, attestations, and original data collection must be completed and recorded by the student under the applicable Walden process.

7. Run the Week 3 quality gate

Test equity, feasibility, stakeholder effects, measurement validity, unintended consequences, and the boundary between association and causation.

Then perform a literal instruction audit: every prompt part answered, rubric row visible, calculation reproducible, citation matched, heading and format correct, accessibility checked, file opened successfully, and confidential material removed. Compare against the current rubric, not a saved rubric from another section or term.

8. Submit and close the loop

The student performs the final upload or entry, opens the submitted artifact, confirms the timestamp and file, and saves the receipt. When feedback arrives, record each criterion result, instructor comment, correction, and lesson for Week 4. Contact the instructor or official support channel promptly for a missing, late, or technically failed submission.

9. Defend the learning before moving on

Before closing Week 3, the student should explain the live task, central claim or decision, strongest evidence, method or calculation, important limitation, and next action aloud without reading the submitted artifact. For a discussion, explain what the peer exchanges changed. For clinical, field, research, group, or proctored work, identify which parts the student personally performed and how they were verified. Any point that cannot be explained becomes the first short practice item for the next study session. This oral defense tests understanding more honestly than another formatting pass and turns the finished Week into preparation for Week 4.

Three ways Week 3 goes wrong, and the repair for each

The first pitfall is the summary paragraph that nobody asked for. Recounting what a source says is easy to write and reads as effort, but it satisfies no reasoning row. The repair is a rule at the paragraph level: every paragraph must end on your sentence rather than the source's, and that sentence must say what follows for the population, the stakeholder, or the decision.

The second pitfall is confusing a strong correlation with a working mechanism. Evaluation writing collapses quickly when an association is described in causal language. The repair is to search the draft for words that imply production of an effect and, at each one, either supply the mechanism and the design that supports it or rewrite the sentence in associational terms and say plainly what would be needed to go further.

The third pitfall is hiding the reasoning inside a long paragraph where the reader has to find it. The repair is structural: put the claim in the first sentence of the paragraph, keep one claim per paragraph, and let the section headings follow the reasoning steps rather than the topic labels. None of this overrides the live instructions, and your classroom rubric decides how the section is judged.
