2. State the Week's reasoning question
For Data Collection and Analysis for Evidence-Based Practice, the durable class question is: Which decision does the number inform, and what assumptions make the result valid? Translate the live activity into one sentence that names the decision or explanation, the required evidence, the audience, and the expected output. If that sentence cannot be written, return to the prompt instead of guessing from a prior Week or third-party example.
Worked reasoning: making the chain visible on the page
Showing reasoning is a layout decision as much as a thinking one. The chain named on the class page has several links, and each should be findable by a reader who is scanning rather than reading: the inputs with their units, the rule or formula applied, the intermediate result, the interpretation, the sensitivity check, and the decision that follows. Put the rule on its own line before the number it produces. Put the number in a labeled cell with its unit and period. Put the interpretation in the sentence immediately after the exhibit rather than three paragraphs later, where a scoring reader will not connect the two.
Work an example through before you write. Suppose a set of values is summarized only by its mean. The mean answers a question about the center and says nothing about how far the extremes sit from it, so a decision that depends on spread cannot be made from that summary at all. Report a measure of spread alongside every measure of center, and where the distribution is visibly skewed, say so, report the median with a range, and explain in one sentence why the substitution changes what the reader should conclude. 3. Build the work in proof order
Show inputs, units, formula or analytical rule, intermediate result, interpretation, sensitivity, and decision. A correct number without a defensible meaning is unfinished.
Make a rubric-to-evidence matrix before prose: one row per criterion, the evidence or reasoning needed, where it will appear, what the student must personally do, and the test that will prove completion. Draft the highest-risk row first, not necessarily the introduction. Protect time for replies, calculations, format conversion, approvals, and the final upload.
Reading the rubric row by row for its verbs

4. Use evidence deliberately
Separate source data from calculated fields, label units and periods, cite external benchmarks, and keep enough working detail for another reader to reproduce the result.
For every source, write a one-line use note before drafting. Distinguish direct evidence from interpretation and local observation. Quote sparingly, paraphrase from understanding, and cite the claim actually supported. If the activity requires current evidence, confirm publication dates and whether an older foundational source is still appropriate.
Sources that carry a method, not only a topic
A reasoning Week needs two kinds of citation and most drafts arrive with only one. Topic sources establish what is known about the question: peer-reviewed studies, systematic reviews, and guidance from recognized professional bodies. Method sources establish that the rule you applied was the right rule: a statistics or measurement text, a research design reference, or the published documentation of a standard measure. When you convert a count into a rate, choose a summary statistic, set a threshold, or declare a comparison fair, a method source is what turns your choice from preference into practice.
Working them in is largely a matter of placement. A method citation belongs beside the rule, inside the sentence that states how the number was produced, not stacked at the end of the paragraph with everything else. A topic citation belongs beside the claim it supports. Keep the use note habit from the class page: one line per source recording the finding, the limitation, and the exact claim, written before drafting rather than reconstructed afterwards. 7. Run the Week 3 quality gate
Recalculate independently, test signs and units, inspect reasonableness, and reconcile every table or figure with the prose recommendation.
Then perform a literal instruction audit: every prompt part answered, rubric row visible, calculation reproducible, citation matched, heading and format correct, accessibility checked, file opened successfully, and confidential material removed. Compare against the current rubric, not a saved rubric from another section or term.
Three Week 3 pitfalls and the fix for each
The first is an exhibit that no sentence interprets. A table can be accurate, well formatted, and worth nothing to a reasoning row if the reader has to supply its meaning. The fix is a standing rule: every table and figure is followed immediately by one sentence naming what it rules in or out, and the prose recommendation and the exhibit must agree on every value they share.
The second is a summary statistic chosen by habit. Reporting a mean because it is familiar, on values whose shape makes it misleading, produces a defensible calculation and an indefensible conclusion. The fix is to look at the shape of the data before choosing the summary, state the reason for the choice in the text, and pair every measure of center with a measure of spread so the reader can see what the single number is hiding.
The third is hidden arithmetic: the result appears, the rule does not, and no reader can reproduce the step. The fix is to state inputs, rule, and result in that order on the page, and to keep the working file that produced the figure. When a number is questioned, a saved derivation answers in minutes, while a reconstruction from memory takes an evening and often produces a third value.
8. Submit and close the loop
The student performs the final upload or entry, opens the submitted artifact, confirms the timestamp and file, and saves the receipt. When feedback arrives, record each criterion result, instructor comment, correction, and lesson for Week 4. Contact the instructor or official support channel promptly for a missing, late, or technically failed submission.
9. Defend the learning before moving on
Before closing Week 3, the student should explain the live task, central claim or decision, strongest evidence, method or calculation, important limitation, and next action aloud without reading the submitted artifact. For a discussion, explain what the peer exchanges changed. For clinical, field, research, group, or proctored work, identify which parts the student personally performed and how they were verified. Any point that cannot be explained becomes the first short practice item for the next study session. This oral defense tests understanding more honestly than another formatting pass and turns the finished Week into preparation for Week 4.
